Sometimes growth is easiest when we have nothing to lose. When we’ve hit rock bottom and there’s nowhere to go but up.
But what if you’re at a place in your life where things are going pretty well… yet you’re feeling kind of stagnant or uninspired, and you’re itching for more?
If that’s you, I encourage you to consider adding a few targeted affirmations into your daily routine. They have the power to change things quickly.
Have you ever worked with affirmations before? The first time I tried them, I was in high school—socially insecure, filled with self-doubt, and constantly criticizing myself.
And guess what happened? Nothing! At least, that’s how it seemed. I was still triggered by my environment, and no matter how many affirmations I repeated, I couldn’t rein in my fear of not being enough.
So, why don’t affirmations always work?
1) In my case, the statements I was repeating were “pain-focused.” They included phrases like, “I am releasing anger, grief, and apathy.”
I was so focused on letting go of what I didn’t want to feel that I wasn’t intentionally choosing what I did want to feel.
2) Another reason affirmations don’t always work is that we give up too soon.
Affirmations that create real change are the ones we repeat long enough for them to become part of our mindset.
3) And finally, our subconscious mind might simply not believe them yet.
There’s a gestation period before we see new results—just like it takes 11 months for a horse to be born. But don’t worry, there’s a workaround for this!
Affirmations 101
1- First, take note of the mental and emotional qualities you long to embody. Maybe you want to feel more confident, financially savvy, excited about exercise, more grateful, or have a better sense of humor.
2- Next, identify what you’d love to achieve—a regular self-care routine, earning a certain amount of money with ease, deeper and more fun connections with friends, or greater intimacy with your partner.
3- Then, recognize a limiting belief that’s been holding you back.
For example:
“I’m always late.”
“I need more experience to be successful.”
“I never seem to make more than X amount of money.”
“My body needs to change before I can feel good about myself.”
4- Now, create an affirmation that speaks directly to your longing, describes the achievement as if it’s already done, or states the opposite of your limiting belief.
For example:
“I am confident, calm, and relaxed in every interaction.”
“I am business-confident and financially savvy.”
“I am in the best shape of my life.”
“I love who I am and I love who I’m becoming.”
“I am early to all my appointments, and it feels easy.”
“I am interesting and fun to be around.”
“I am generating X amount of money per month with ease.”
If you’re willing to try an experiment, commit to 3–4 affirmations for 40 days.
Memorize them. Repeat them several times a day—not just when things feel hard, but also as an “energetic supplement” to your daily routine.
If you struggle to believe your affirmations, try what my coach, Lauren Brollier-Newton, taught me: Start with “I love that I am now…” followed by the affirmation.
Most importantly, decide for the result you’re affirming.
Every time you speak your affirmation, you’re not denying your current reality—you’re harnessing your creative power, directing your energy, and telling your subconscious mind, “This is the result I’m choosing. This is where we’re headed.”
Affirmations are truly just a way to anchor and amplify what you have decided for your life.
With love,
Cynthia
