When I work with clients on the vision they have for their lives, it can be helpful to break it down into smaller goals or milestones along the way. Here are some tips you can apply to your own life to help bring your vision to life a step at a time.
#1 Set a goal that your nervous system can get behind
A goal is much more achievable if you have a frame of reference for it. Otherwise your nervous system will tend to panic and you won’t feel aligned to it. This is when imposter system, doubt and fear of failure can become debilitating.
For example, if you are an entrepreneur, and you’ve consistently made $30k a year in your business, setting a goal to bring in $1 million is going to feel like a fantasy.
Instead, start by doubling a result you’ve already achieved. Making a goal of $60k is going to feel like within the realm of what you already know how to do. Then, when you hit that, you may want to double it again for your next goal.
#2 Ask what step can I take…
One of the most underutilized tools we have when it comes to achieving a goal is our connection to infinite intelligence.
Looking back through history, we can see examples of how powerful this can be when we look at people who utilized it well, such as Thomas Edison, Henry David Thoreau, and Albert Einstein.
To use this “power” you have literally at your fingertips, there is a simple method I recommend.
1- Grab a piece of paper and a pen.
2- Set a timer for 3-5 minutes. Ask “What step can I take to_____ (state goal, such as: bring in $60k this year)?”
3- Write down every single idea that pops in. There is only one rule with this- do NOT edit yourself at this step. Write down everything that comes up.
4- Now choose the step that feels most expansive- especially if it scares you. Those are the best ones! If there are many ideas that feel expansive, hang on to this and take each one a step at a time.
#3 Lean into the expansion
Like we spoke about last week, leaning into what feels expansive is always the answer. You’ll never make the wrong decision. Even if it isn’t the end all be all, it is leading you to the right step.
On the contrary, when we ignore what inspires us, and instead lean into fear and doubt… these constrictive energies which often tell us to wait, pump the brakes, think more “logically” or try to “figure out” a safer or more conservative option, we tend to stall out or miss the mark all together.
#4 Troubleshooting
Often times clients ask me, what if my overall vision or goal feels expansive, but I don’t feel motivated or excited about taking the steps? You can ask yourself, “Do I believe this step will bring me even an inch closer to my vision?” If the answer is “Yes” just do it. Taking action is like a muscle that you need to get into the habit of doing. Just start, and eventually, it will take on a life of its own.
Most importantly, celebrate yourself and enjoy the process!
